The National Emergency Preparedness Award was established by the Public Health Service in 1988. The Medal was awarded to officers of the Commissioned Corps in recognition of emergency relief service. To be eligible for the award, the recipient must have served in an approved emergency preparedness activity with an organized unit for 2 or more continuous years. Eligible organized units include the National Disaster Medical System Disaster Medical Assistance Team, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, and the Commissioned Corps Readiness Force.
