History

The Special Assignment Award was established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The Medal is awarded to any Public Health Service officer in recognition of 30 days or more of consecutive service in a special program initiative of other Federal or state agencies or organizations specified by the Assistant Secretary of Health. Only services performed outside regular duties are eligible for the award.
