History

The United States Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal was authorized in 1958 by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Commission Corps. The Medal was created as the highest award for members of the United States Public Health Services and is awarded to public health officers in recognition of significant achievements and contributions to the service and the health of the nation. Service which merits the award of the Medal may include but is not limited to, the management of a major health program or single acts of heroism such as saving life, health, or property.

When the award is made in recognition of acts of heroism, a bronze "V" emblem device is worn on the ribbon. Additionally, a gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal. A silver star may be worn in lieu of 5 gold stars.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by reverse design. Early versions of the Medal feature the reverse inscription "DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH EDUCATION AND WELFARE" while later versions of the Medal feature a blank reverse.

There may be additional versions of the Medal which vary by obverse design.
