History

The Air Force Distinguished Service Medal was authorized by Congress on July 6, 1960, to replace the Army Distinguished Service Medal as an award for Air Force personnel. However, the award was not adopted for use until November 1, 1965. The Gold Medal was mostly awarded to Officers above the rank of Major-General in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service to the government. Officers below the rank of Major-General may also be eligible for the award of the Medal, but these occurrences are rare. One such example of a notable recipient of the Medal is Buzz Aldrin. The Medal is also often awarded upon retirement.

Oakleaf clasps are awarded to denoted subsequent awards.

There may be additional versions of the Medal.

It is uncertain if the reverse was officially engraved with the recipient's details.
