History

The Defence Meritorious Service Medal was established by President Jimmy Carter by Executive Order on November 3, 1977. The Medal is awarded to any active member of the Armed Forces assigned to a qualifying joint activity in recognition of non-combat meritorious service or achievement during peacetime. The service must be of a lesser degree than to merit the recognition of the Defence Superior Service Medal, but which is still incontestably exceptional. In 2014, the award was extended to members of the Armed Forces of friendly foreign nations.

Bronze or silver oak leaf emblems are available for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards.
