History
The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was initially established by the Secretary of the Navy on May 1, 1961, as the "Secretary of the Navy Commendation Medal for Achievement," which was awarded as a ribbon only. On July 17, 1967, the award was redesignated as the "Navy Achievement Medal" and a square pendant was introduced. In 1994, the name of the award was officially changed to the "Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal." The Bronze Medal is awarded only to enlisted personnel and junior Officers in recognition of professional leadership and achievement since May 1, 1961, that goes beyond the normal expectations of duty and is of benefit to the United States Naval Services, but which does not merit the recognition of a higher award. Unlike the Army and Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal may be awarded for both combat and non-combat service.
Gold and silver stars are worn on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal and, since 1991, a "V" device may be worn to represent awards made in recognition of combat heroism.
