Cambodia, French "Protectorate", 1863-1948

From the 9th to the 15th century Cambodia experienced its heyday. It was the kingdom of Kambuja. In 1863 Cambodia came under French supremacy.

Cambodia continued as a protectorate of France from 1867 to 1953, administered as part of the colony of French Indochina, though occupied by the Japanese empire from 1941 to 1945.
After the withdrawal of the Japanese and the occupation of Phnom Penh by the British France was again the "protective power".

The Order of the Cambodia was the highest title and was instituted by King Norodom I while under French Colonial rule.
