History

This Order was established by Emperor Meiji in recognition of long, faithful civil or military service, or for meritorious civil or military service. It is conferrable upon men and women, who became eligible for this award in 1919. It may also be awarded posthumously.

In 2003, this Order was revised; it was decreased to 6 classes from the original 8.
