This award is also referred to as "Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan".

It is conferred upon Philippine citizens in recognition of his/her artistic excellence in any traditional Philippine art. Categories of traditional folk arts considered include: architecture, maritime transport, weaving, carving, performing arts, literature, graphic/plastic arts, ornament, textile/fibre art and pottery.
