History

This medal was conferred upon Vietnamese military personnel in recognition of at least 6 months of service in major Vietnamese military operations from March 8, 1949 to July 20, 1954, and January 1, 1960 to a date that was never determined due to the end of the South Vietnam Government.

This medal was also awarded to foreign military personnel that directly supported Vietnamese actions.

This ribbon may be decorated with a silver coloured banner dated "1949-54", which was primarily awarded to Vietnamese military personnel. It may also be decorated with a silver coloured banner dated "1960-", which was primarily awarded to Allied units.

The reverse translates to "Campaign" and "Medal".
