The medal was instituted to commemorate the efforts of Czechoslovakian citizens and military personnel who fought to liberate Czechoslovakia during World War II.

The obverse inscription translates to "The Twentieth Anniversary of the Liberation of Czechoslovakia 1965," and the reverse inscription roughly translates to "For Merit in the Battles Against Fascism 1945."
