History

This Order was established by the Estonian Defence League in 1928 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Estonian independence. In 1936 it was adopted by the Estonian Parliament in the Decoration Act, which recognized it as a national award. The Order was suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but was later renewed in 1995 after the restoration of Estonian independence.

It is conferred upon Estonian citizens and foreigners in recognition of meritorious military service and service to national defence. When conferred upon members of the military, the decoration is awarded with swords. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The II Class Cross is identical to the III Class Cross, however only the II Class Cross is worn with a Breast Star. The reverse inscription translates to "For the Homeland."
