History

The Pilot Badge is classified into four types based on changes in design during different political regimes.

The Type III Badge was instituted in the spring of 1974 and features a phoenix above the flying eagle.

There are three versions of the Type III Badge that differ in composition. The first version was worn on the dress uniform, and the others were worn on the service uniform.

In some instances, the Type II Badge was worn with a separate metallic phoenix pin above the badge.
