History

The Commendation Medal of Merit and Honour was established by Presidential Decree on May 15, 1991. It was originally awarded in a single grade, but a second was added in 1996. It is awarded to Senior Officers for distinguished service and excellent command of Army, Navy or Air Force formations, to foreign Officers for distinguished service rendered to the Hellenic Armed Forces or the Hellenic Republic, and to Greek citizens and foreigners for meritorious actions rendered to the Hellenic Armed Forces or the Greek nation.

The medallion of the Silver Star is identical to the Gilt Medal. The obverse inscription translates to "Merit" and "Honour."
