History

The Royal Order of St. George & St. Constantine was created by King George II in late 1935 or early 1936 to honour his father, King George I, and his grandfather, King Constantine I. It has not been awarded by the Hellenic Republic since the Greek monarchy was abolished in 1975, but it may still be awarded by the Greek Royal House.

It was conferred exclusively upon men, and primarily upon men of royal blood. Only a small number of decorations were conferred upon non-royal Greek men for distinguished service to the Sovereign in the early years of the Order. Each grade has a Civil Division decoration and a Military Division decoration.

See also the Royal Family Order of St. Olga and St. Sophia (GRC 105) in the Orders of Greece for the equivalent Royal Family order conferred upon women.
