History

The Star of the Lithuanian Rifleman's Union was instituted in 1930 as an award of the Lithuanian Rifleman's Association. It was suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but it was re-instated following the collapse of the Soviet regime and the declaration of the Republic of Lithuania. It was a state decoration from 1991-2002, but it has since been administered by the Ministry of National Defence.

The Lithuanian Rifleman's Union is a state-supported paramilitary organisation, recognised for its participation in the Second World War, the Lithuanian resistance, and general military support and training.

The Star is awarded to members of the Union, as well as foreigners, in recognition of meritorious contributions to the Union and the nation in general.

The Silver Star features a reverse inscription that translates to "For Merit." A total of 439 were awarded from 1930-1940.

Although the design has never changed, manufacturers may differ between periods. This Star is also listed in the Medals & Decorations of the Republic of Lithuania (1991-).
