History

The Medal of the Order of Vytautas the Great was established in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Vytautas the Great, Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1392-1430. It was suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but it was officially re-instated in 1995 following the collapse of the Soviet regime and the declaration of the Republic of Lithuania. It was amended again in 2002.

It is awarded to Lithuanian military personnel and civilians for meritorious services rendered to the nation. It can also be awarded with a crossed swords clasp for wartime merit.

The II Class Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Vytautas the Great." A total of 206 II Class Medals were awarded in the Lithuanian Republic from 1930-1940. No II Class Medals (with swords) were awarded during this period.

The current version of the Medal is listed in the Medals & Decorations of the Republic of Lithuania (1991-). See also the Order of Vytautas the Great in the Orders of the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) and the Republic of Lithuania (1991-).
