History

The Order for Merits to Lithuania is conferred upon Lithuanian citizens in recognition of distinguished merit in a variety of fields including culture, science, military science, business, economics, public service, sports, and education. It may also be conferred in recognition of meritorious humanitarian aid and international diplomacy.

There are seven different versions of the Commander that differ in suspension according to the type of service rendered by the recipient. The suspension with three oak leaves is awarded for distinguished humanitarian service, the suspension with the Columns of Gediminas is awarded for distinguished merit in public service and international relations, the suspension with an open book is awarded for distinguished service in culture and education, the suspension with the wings of Mercury is awarded for distinguished merit in business and industry, the suspension with the staff of Aesculapius is awarded for distinguished service in healthcare and social welfare, the suspension with crossed swords is awarded for distinguished merit in military affairs, and the suspension with a torch is awarded for distinguished merit in sports.

The Commander is identical to the Grand Cross Commander, however, only the Grand Cross Commander is worn with a Breast Star. It is worn by men on a neck ribbon and by women on a bow.

See also the Medal of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in the Medals & Decorations of the Republic of Lithuania (1991-) for the medal that was created alongside the Order.
