History

The Decoration for Merit to Polish Culture was established by the Ministry of Culture and Arts in 1969. It was awarded to Polish citizens, institutions, and organisations in recognition of contributions to Polish culture, including art, music, and literature. It was discontinued following the collapse of the communist regime, but a similar award was established by the Republic of Poland in 1994.

The Gold Medal features initials that stand for "Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa" (Polish People's Republic) and an additional inscription that translates to "For Merit to Polish Culture."

See also the Decoration for Merit to Polish Culture (POL601) in the Medals & Decorations of the Third Polish Republic (1989-).
