History

The Medal for Sacrifice and Courage was established by the Council of State in 1960. It was retained by the Republic of Poland following the collapse of the communist regime and is currently awarded to Polish citizens and foreigners for risking their life in saving another person or property. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Silver Medal features a reverse inscription that can be translated to "For Sacrifice and Courage in Defence of Life and Property."
