History

The Medal for Defenders of Independence was established by King Carol I in 1878 in commemoration of the Romanian War of Independence. It was awarded to Romanian military personnel and civilians for participation in the war.

The Bronze Medal has a reverse inscription that translates to “To the Defenders of Independence in the War of 1877-1878.” Military personnel wore their medal on a light blue ribbon with red stripes and civilians wore their medal on a dark blue ribbon edged with yellow and red.

There may be additional versions of the Bronze Medal that differ in manufacturer.
