History

The Pro Virtute Militari Medal (1860) was established by Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1860. It was originally intended to recognise military personnel who participated in the Battle of Dealul Spirii (1848), although it was never actually awarded by Cuza due to opposition from Ottoman and Habsburg rulers. It was, however, minted following Cuza's abdication in 1866, and was later awarded to the intended recipients in 1872.
