History

The Medal of Medical Merit was awarded to Romanian medical professionals in recognition of meritorious service in the field, but it was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

The Bronze Medal features the bowl of Hygieia, a common symbol for pharmaceutical practice that originates from depictions of the Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health and sanitation. It has an obverse inscription that translates to "Romanian Socialist Republic," and a reverse inscription that translates to "Medal for Medal Merit."

See also Order of Medical Merit in the Orders of Romanian People's Republic & Romanian Socialist Republic (1947-1989) for the order that was created alongside this medal.
