History

The Medal of Military Merit was awarded to members of the Romanian Armed Forces, the Security Force, and the Police Force in recognition of long and meritorious service, but it was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

There are two versions of the I Class Medal. The first features the initials of the Romanian People’s Republic and the second features the initials of the Romanian Socialist Republic. Both versions have a reverse inscription that translates to “Military Merit.”

See also Order of Military Merit in the Orders of Romanian People's Republic & Romanian Socialist Republic (1947-1989) for the order that was created alongside this medal.
