History

The Motherhood Medal was awarded to Romanian mothers in recognition of raising large families. The I Class was conferred upon mothers with 6 children and the II Class was conferred upon mothers with 5 children. It was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

There are two versions of the II Class Medal. The first features the initials of the Romanian People's Republic and the second features the initials of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Both versions have a reverse inscription that translates to "Motherhood Medal."

See also the Order of Maternal Glory in the Orders of the Romanian People's Republic & Romanian Socialist Republic (1947-1989) for the order that was created alongside this medal.
