History

The National Defence Medal was awarded in recognition of contributions to national defence. It was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

There are three versions of the Medal. The first version, awarded from 1957-1965, features the name of the Romanian People's Republic. The second and third versions were awarded during the Socialist Republic of Romania, but feature alternate inscriptions in the obverse crest.
