The Order was established in 1996 by President Leonid Kuchma, and it was first awarded on August 22 of the same year.
It is granted in recognition of personal courage in emergencies involving saving people, or valuable materials, in peril at the risk of the recipient's own life.
The Order is considered to be equal to the Star of Courage and Cross of Courage, Orders which predate the Order for Courage.
The obverse inscription translate to “For Courage”.
