History

This Medal is associated with the Italian Red Cross Medal of Merit, which was instituted in 1913 during the Kingdom of Italy.

The modern Medal continues to be awarded to Italian Red Cross personnel for helping populations in times of strife, whether they are caused by armed conflicts or natural disasters.

The obverse medallion features the emblem of the Italian Republic.

The ribbon of the Gold Medal is decorated with a gold coloured star. When the Gold Medal is awarded for war service it is decorated with a gold coloured emblem of the Italian Republic.
