This Medal is a re-instituted version of the Medal of Merit of Long Command of the Royal Army, ITA310, which was established during the Kingdom of Italy in 1935.

The Silver Medal is conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces, public security, prison services, state police, and the financial guard who have rendered a minimum of 15 years of service, especially within a leadership role.

The ribbon varies for each type of recipient. Members of the Armed Forces wear the medal on a ribbon with 9 white stripes and 10 blue stripes. Guards within public security, prison services, and state police wear the medal on a ribbon with 9 white stripes and 10 red stripes. Personnel within the Financial Guard wear the medal on a ribbon with 5 white stripes and six blue stripes. Each ribbon may feature a star composed of a thread the colour of the corresponding grade.
