History

This Order is a commemorative award and it was primarily conferred in recognition of service within the Italian Armed Forces for a minimum period of 6 months during World War I.

The Order was also awarded to military personnel who fought in previous wars and won the Cross of War Merit.

The President of the Republic is the head of the Order.

Following the death of the last living recipient, this Order will become obsolete.
