History

The Medal was founded by Victor Emmanuel III to recognize the exceptional skill, courage, and philanthropy demonstrated by members of the Air Force during operations. It was generally awarded to individual Air Force Pilots, but in 1939 the Medal was expanded to also recognize Unit Commanders and crews whose valourious actions had brought honour to Italian Aviation.

The medal may feature engraver and manufacturer marks, including “Z TAILETTI MOD.V.DI LA LAZZERO DIS.” and “38 MI,” or have no marks at all.

The reverse medallion may feature the engrave details of the recipient.

The Gold Medal was awarded for demonstrating skill and bravery difficult and life threatening circumstances, and for exceptionally valourious actions that brought honour to Italian Aviation.
