This Medal was founded by Victor Emmanuel III to commemorate the Atlantic flight of the decade, the second air crossing of the Atlantic, and those who had died in the attempt. It was awarded to all individuals who had participated in the momentous flight.

The Medal was designed by Publius Morbiducci.
