The Medal was established by Victor Emmanuel III recognize the merit of mothers who had given birth to, and raised, a minimum of seven children. It was also awarded to mothers who had lost their children as a result of the war. In 1943, the Medal was amended to include mothers who were war widows and had raised a minimum of 6 children.

This Medal was discontinued in 1950.
