This Medal was founded by the President of the Provisional Government of Venice, Daniele Manin.

The Medal was meant to recognize the honour and merit of the troops who fought to free the city of Venice from the Austrians on March 22, 1849.

Various sizes of the medal exist, ranging from 26-31mm.
