History

The Order was founded to reward individuals of noble birth for civil and military services.

There is dispute over the date of the Order's institution, some believing the date might be as early as the early 8th century.

The later form of the insignia is believed to have the form of a cross.

The obverse of the insignia features a winged lion with the Order's motto, while the reverse is believed to have featured a portrait of the reigning Doge of Venice.

The obverse inscription roughly translates to "Peace to Thee, Mark, My Evangelist".
