The Cross for Fernando Poo was instituted in Spain by Royal Decree of 13th December, 1843. It was awarded in commemoration of the 57 marines, led by Captain Lerena, who confirmed the Spanish possession of the islands Fernando Poo, Corisco, Annobon, and Elobey at the Gulf of Guinea.
The composition denotes the rank of the recipient; the Gold Cross was conferred upon Officers while the Silver Cross was awarded to enlisted men.
The Cross features an obverse inscription that refers to the name of the ship "Nervión".
