History

The Civil Order of Health (Orden Civil de Sanidad) was established by Francisco Franco on July 27, 1943. It was founded as successor of the Epidemic Crosses founded in 19th century.

It is currently awarded to recognize foreign and national individuals, and organizations, that provide outstanding service and develop activities relating to the field of health.

The grades are Grand Cross, Commander, and Cross. The Commander Breast Star is always in conjunction with the Commander, but the Commander may also be conferred alone.

The Grand Cross has a limited number of 5 members, while the Commander with Breast Star has a limited of 10 grants, and the Commander has a limited of 20 grants. The Knight has a limited number of 50 members.

Currently, the Order is the highest Civil Order in Spain that recognized merit and honor within the health field.

During the government of Francisco Franco, there were awarded 31 Grand Crosses.

The Grand Cross is also known as the Great Cross.

The Order features a obverse inscription that translates to "To Sanitary Merit."
