This medal was never officially instituted, instead it was founded via letter by Emperor Franz II in 1798.

The medal was awarded in recognition to 8 English Officers from the British 15th Chauvaulegers Regiment for their meritorious service in Belgium on April 24, 1794 alongside the Emperor Franz II.

The recipients were later awarded the Military Order of Maria Theresia.

Each of the recipient were also given a gold chain on which to wear the medal.
