This medal was founded to commemorate the ceremonial coronation of Franz I as the Holy Roman Emperor.

It was awarded to members of the Emperor's cohort, without any consideration of rank.

The Type II and Type III awards feature a standing lion holding a Cross of Lorraine on the reverse medallion.
