This medal was instituted by Emperor Joseph II to commemorate his ascension to the position of Roman King.

It was awarded to recognize Austrian citizens for extraordinary military service and achievements.

The Type IV awards were founded by Emperor Joseph II following his mother's death.

The Gold Medal could be worn on a gold chain around the neck of the recipient as a sign of additional honour.
