This medal was instituted by Emperor Franz II to recognize Tyroleans who had formed a voluntary contingent to support the Emperor in expelling the French from Tyrol and protecting the Empire.

The Large Gold Medal was awarded to high ranking Officers.

There are only 3 known examples of the Large Gold Medal.
