This medal was instituted by Emperor Franz Joseph I to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his honourary leadership of the 13th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment.

The Bronze Medal was conferred upon lower ranking members of the Regiment, such as Non-Commissioned Officers.
