This medal was instituted by Emperor Franz Joseph I to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his honourary leadership of the 13th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment.

The Silver Medal was conferred upon high ranking members of the Regiment, such as Officers and medical staff.
