This medal is awarded to recognize Austrian citizens that have risked their lives to rescue someone in peril.

The Gold and Silver medals have the same design as the medals within the Decoration of Honour for Services tot he Republic of Austria, except they are worn on a red ribbon.

The reverse inscription translates to "For Services to the Republic of Austria".

When the medal is awarded to women it is worn on a bow ribbon.

The Silver Medal was discontinued on February 15, 1968.
