This medal was instituted by the Minister of the Interior Oskar Helmer, and it ia conferred upon members of mine rescue teams that have risked their lives to rescue individuals in peril within mines.

The medal is awarded to mine rescue team members for 15 years of service, or for a specific and extraordinarily brave act within mine rescue services.

The reverse inscription translates to "For Merit in Mine Rescue".
