This medal was conferred upon all Austrians that rendered service during World War I.

When the medal is awarded to women it is worn on a bow ribbon.

On November 10, 1933 crossed swords were decreed for recipients of the medal who has served on the front, were a POW, and were wounded during active service. These crossed swords were added to the medal's ribbon.
