History

This campaign medal was issued by the Belgian city of Liège in commemoration of the heroic resistance against German forces in the first battle of the First World War. It was awarded to all military personnel who fought in this battle from August 5 to August 16, 1914. Although it is an unofficial award, it is held in high regard and has been tolerated for wear on Belgian military uniforms.

The obverse inscription translates to "The City of Liege, To Its Valiant Defenders." The medal is suspended from a ribbon with the colours of the city.
