History

The Yser Medal and the Yser Cross were awarded to members of the Belgian Armed Forces, members of Allied forces, and other foreigners in recognition of distinguished service in the Battle of the Yser (IJzer) from October 17, 1914 to October 31, 1914. It was also awarded posthumously.

The Yser Cross replaced the Yser Medal on February 5, 1934. Although the Cross is considered the official form of the award, it is estimated to be very rare because recipients were made to exchange the medal for the cross at their own expense.
