Established by King Christian IX, this medal was awarded to recognize individuals who have rendered at least 25 years of service to the Danish Lifeboat Institution by March 26, 1902, the day of the 50th anniversary of the foundation.

Individuals who served at least 25 years, but retired, were eligible to receive the award, as long as their retirement was only due to health problems or their age.
