Established by Queen Margrethe II, this medal is awarded to recognize civil and military Armed Forces personnel who have rendered heroic services in a battle against terrorists or in combat, as well as, nationals and foreigners who have demonstrated acts of gallantry and heroism, that have benefited the Danish Defense.

This medal may be awarded posthumously.

When awarded for a second time it may be awarded with a silver oak leaf clasp, and if awarded for a third time may be awarded with a golden oak leaf clasp.

The reverse inscription of this medal includes the the year that the recipient participated in battle.
